Gedankenspeicher (Thought Capture)
Capture fleeting thoughts instantly — via text or voice — without breaking your flow.
What is Gedankenspeicher?
Gedankenspeicher ("thought storage") is a fast-capture system for quick ideas, reminders, and thoughts. Instead of creating a formal note, you capture the thought instantly and process it later.
Text Capture
Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + T
- Press the shortcut to open the text capture overlay
- Type your thought
- Press the shortcut again to save
Voice Capture
Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + G
- Press the shortcut to start recording
- Speak your thought (up to 5 minutes)
- Press the shortcut again to stop
- Mioru transcribes your voice via Whisper and saves the thought
The voice overlay shows a centered microphone card with a subtle theme-colored aura — clear visual feedback that Mioru is listening.
Processing Modes
Both text and voice capture support three processing modes:
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Plain | Saves your input exactly as-is, no AI processing |
| Strukturiert | AI organizes your thought into a structured note with headings and bullet points |
| Zusammengefasst | AI summarizes your thought into a concise note |
Where Thoughts Are Stored
All captured thoughts go into the dedicated Gedankenspeicher/ folder in your vault:
- Files are named with date prefixes:
2026-05-23_Mein-Gedanke.md - AI-generated titles are used when available (from Strukturiert or Zusammengefasst modes)
- If AI processing fails, Mioru preserves your raw input — no thought is ever lost
Sidebar Integration
Gedankenspeicher appears as a dedicated collapsible block in the sidebar, below the search bar. It's separate from your regular project tree so captured thoughts don't clutter your folder structure.
Reliability
- Best-effort AI processing: If the AI call fails, the raw input is saved unchanged
- Immediate indexing: New entries update the Vault Index instantly, so they appear in Ctrl+K search right away
- Missing API key: Voice capture shows a clear error if the OpenAI key is missing — app state is never lost
